This book is different. It pretends to by a mystery, it is funny, but it is mostly a sad commentary on life for women in Pakistan.
The author, Cheryl Benard, is an American born woman who is the wife of Zalmay Khalilzad, the former US Ambassador to the UN, Afghanistan and Iraq. Khalilzad was born in Afghanistan, came to university in the US, met Benard, and became a citizen of this country.
With her background as an expert in women’s issues worldwide, Benard has written a brilliant study in human unwillingness to see other people as they are instead of as we want them to be. None of us are immune to the thinking process she successfully condemns within the story.
Oh, yes, it’s a good mystery.
