Carter has created an irresistible hero in Garrison Gage, a man so deep in twin pains, he has just about given up on the world. Discovering a young woman washed up on the beach drags him unwillingly into solving the mystery of her death. Throughout the case, we learn as much about his pain as about the crime.
This is the first of four books so far and I hope there are more. Gage is too good a character to waste his time on crossword puzzles.
Carter has written many books in several genres.
